When I first started blogging in 1999, it was practically unheard of, and there were almost no tools to help. Every article on my blog is hand-coded, including monthly archive pages, “older posts” sections, and so on. Simply put, I wasn’t a particularly prolific blogger in the first few years.

Today, anybody can get up and running in a matter of minutes by utilizing free services that make adding a post as simple as writing an email. Getting to know how to distribute your content is no longer a barrier — if you have something to say, saying it is simple.

Your blog is only as limited as your interests — what do you want to say? Consider what you want your blog to accomplish — do you want it to be a documentation of your daily life, or a way to keep your family and friends updated while you’re away? Or perhaps you’d like a place to publicize your writing, music, or artwork while also keeping in touch with your fans? Perhaps you want a channel through which you can communicate with your customers — and through which they can communicate with you? Maybe you’d like to share your thoughts on politics, freelancing, football coaching, home school teaching, or fishing.
